INGREDIENTS NEEDED: SODIUM LAURYL ETHER SULFATE (SLES), PINE OIL CHLOROXYLENOL, CAUSTIC SODA, CASTOR OIL, IPA, CARAMEL AND WATER.
Sodium lauryl ether sulfate is also called Sodium laureth sulfate or texapon. It is a synthetic body-friendly surfactant. Surfactant means surface-acting compound that has both anionic and cationic sides and can wrap itself on oil debris and at the same time soluble in water by forming foam. Its mild effect on the skin makes it useful in the production of Dettol and other cosmetics.
Pine oil is a colorless to pale yellow essential oil derived from pine trees. It may have fresh forest-like odor or a strong turpentine-like odor depending on its source. It has a lot of medicinal and antibacterial uses on the body including sores, cuts, arthritis, gout, muscular aches & pains, asthma, bronchitis, cold & flu, and stress related body conditions.
Chloroxylenol is generally a good antiseptic that destroys pathogenic bacteria. It has a wide safety use in humans and environment hence also used in soaps and cosmetics to preventskin diseases.
Caustic soda or Sodium hydroxide is a strong alkali. It is highly corrosive hence you must protect yourself when handling it by wearing gloves and face mask when dissolving in water. Note that 1teaspoon of caustic soda must first be dissolved in 50-100mls of water for 1hour or more before you start production.
Castor oil is vegetable oil with health benefits derived from castor seed. It is antiinflammatory and anti-oxidant pale yellow oil useful for treating skin infections and against wrinkles. It can be purchased from the pharmacist or health food store.
MATERIALS NEEDED: SMALL MIXING BOWL, LONG SPOON, MEASURING CUP AND DISPENSING BOTTLE.
METHOD: To make 300mls of Dettol, take a scoop of texapon with a teaspoon in the bowl and add 100mls of IPA to dissolve the texapon. Add 25mls of chloroxylenol, 50mls of pine oil and 10mls of castor oil. Then, bring out the already dissolved 1 teaspoon of caustic soda and add to the mixture. Measure 10mls of caramel or colourant to it and add more IPA to make up to 300mls.
