HOW TO PRODUCE SODA BLEACH

Let's go into straight into business. What do you need for the production of soda bleach? Come on in.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE (POOL SHOCK), SODA ASH, CAUSTIC SODA AND WATER.

Calcium hypochlorite is formed when milk of lime is chlorinated. When dissolves in caustic soda solution, insoluble sodium chloride (salt), calcium carbonate, sodium hypochlorite and Chlorine gas are formed. The hypochlorite is yellow-green solution with a pungent odor.

Chlorine is very important in medical science. It is used as a disinfectant and for various medicines. The first anesthetic used in surgery was chloroform. Today, chlorine is made into many products including plastic, glue, solvents, foam rubbers, food additives, anti-freeze, car bumpers, pesticides and PVC (Poly vinyl chloride).

Calcium hypochlorite is more stable and is used to produce bleach as a result of chlorine or hypochlorite oxidation and used for removing stains and colors and also as disinfectant in water.

MATERIALS NEEDED: MIXING BOWL, MEASURING CUPS, FUNNEL, DISPENSING BOTTLE AND SPOON.

METHOD: To prepare 2 litres of about 5% bleach solution, first dissolve 100grms of Calcium hypochlorite granules, caustic soda and soda ash each into 500mls of water separately and leave for 1hour or more. After this period, add the soda ash into the chlorine
and later pour the caustic soda to the mixture and continue to stir.

There will be a white cloudy solution which will become settled to form two layers of sediment below and the bleach solution above. Sieve this to get your bleach solution after some hours or after
leaving it overnight. Pour into an opaque bottle and keep away from sunlight or high temperature.
